From a line in the sky to a testable explanation
Contrail Research combines upper-air weather, flight-track context, satellite imagery, and public observation. This library explains what each signal can establish, what it cannot establish, and how we reach conclusions without turning a map correlation into a claim of causation.
Start with the evidence, not the appearance
A white line is an observation. Identifying its origin requires a chain of evidence: time and place, viewing direction, the height and movement of the cloud, nearby flight tracks, and atmospheric conditions at the relevant altitude. Even a strong match may remain probabilistic because public flight feeds can omit aircraft, weather models smooth narrow humid layers, and an older contrail can drift far from the aircraft that produced it.
Our core rule: a flight icon crossing a cloud on a two-dimensional map is a lead to investigate, not proof that the flight made the cloud.

Questions this project can help answer
The project cannot determine the chemical composition of an unseen plume from an ordinary photograph, infer intent from a cloud pattern, or guarantee that a public flight feed contains every aircraft. Those questions require different instruments and evidence.
The publication workflow
Record the observation
Preserve the original timestamp, approximate location, camera direction, and unedited image. Separate what the observer saw from later interpretation.
Gather independent context
Retrieve flight tracks, upper-air weather, and satellite or radar imagery for the same time window. Record source names and retrieval times.
Test competing explanations
Ask what evidence would be expected for a fresh contrail, aged contrail cirrus, natural cirrus, or a low-level cloud feature. Actively look for disconfirming evidence.
State uncertainty plainly
Publish a conclusion only at the strength supported by the weakest necessary link. “Consistent with” is not shorthand for “confirmed.”
